Bangladesh’s Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been chosen to lead an interim government after the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, as announced by the presidency early Wednesday. The decision to appoint Yunus as the head of the interim government was reached during a meeting that included President Mohammed Shahabuddin, military officials, and leaders of the Students Against Discrimination group, according to a statement from Shahabuddin’s office.
Nahid Islam, a student group leader, confirmed this decision to the media following three hours of discussions at the presidential palace. The president’s office urged the public to support efforts to navigate the ongoing crisis, stressing the urgency of forming an interim government. In response to violent protests that led to Hasina’s removal, President Shahabuddin also dismissed the national police chief and appointed a successor. Islam described the discussions as productive and mentioned that the president agreed to establish the interim government as soon as possible.
